20A - Growing Your Social Capital

1) Corrine Rodriguez, Manager at the Humane Society

Corrine owns two golden retrievers and has been working in the Human Society for 12 years now and she really loves her job there. She is in the domain expert slot because she works for an organization that rescues and helps animals just like my business idea, Paws of Love. I have a Humane Society location close to me by the mall I go to and decided to go in and ask if anyone would be willing to answer some of my questions for school and Corrine was happy to volunteer. She offered to mentor me and teach me how the organization runs from the inside in order to gain some knowledge for when I run my business on my own. By including this person in my network, I'll have someone's wise advice from years of experience for when I bump into some challenges.

2) Samantha Perez, Helping Hands Employee

Samantha is 23 years old and recently graduated from FIU. She has been working for Helping Hands for about 2 years now. She falls under the expert slot because she has helped many animals through Helping Hands by rescuing them and getting them ready for adoption. I found Samantha through social media when I found two lost dogs and she offered to help me find them a home. She was very nice and I thought she would be a great person to interview for this. Samantha really likes my business idea especially since it would also help wild animals because there aren't many organizations that help both domestic and wild animals. Including Samantha in my network will help me finding people like her who would want to get involved with working for my business.

3) Anthony Martinez, Petco Employee

Anthony is a full-time student at Miami-Dade College and has been working at Petco for 4 years. He falls under the supplier slot because he works for a business that sells pet and animal care products. When I thought about who would make a good supplier, I thought Petco would be a great option to check out since I shop there for my own pets. I asked Anthony if he'd be willing to do an interview and he happily agreed. Anthony thinks that Petco would be open to sponsoring organizations like the one I have in mind in order to get more brand awareness while also helping the animals. With Anthony in my network, I can easily ask him for more supplies for my business and negotiate with Petco.

Reflection: I believe that networking is an essential part of someone's success especially when it comes to running a business. I always try to network with anyone new that I meet hoping that we can both benefit from each other. This networking experience was different from the ones I had in the past since usually I go to events to network and not people directly with specific criteria like in the activity. It was definitely a valuable experience.

  1. Hey Isabella,

I feel like we both had a similar networking experience. We both had networking experience, but never went directly to people with specific criteria in the activity. We both gained a lot from this assignment in terms of networking and both built our social capital. Based off your interviews you seem to be headed in a great direction towards initiating your business idea. I hope you continue to network this idea.
